Work authorization filtering

Last updated 2026-10-22

Short answer

MatchWire checks work authorization during matching: for a candidate who is not a citizen, it excludes jobs whose text requires citizenship or rules out OPT, CPT, H1B or EAD, so those requirements never reach the recruiter.

Reading a posting only to find it needs citizenship is wasted time. Work authorization is one of the matching rules, applied before a match appears.

How work authorization filtering works

Here is what happens, step by step.

  • Each candidate profile records whether the candidate is a citizen.
  • For a non-citizen candidate, jobs that say citizenship is required are excluded.
  • Jobs that rule out OPT, CPT, H1B or EAD in their text are excluded as well.
  • A recruiter should still read the posting for sponsorship wording before submitting.

A typical day

An OPT consultant’s profile is marked as not a citizen. Postings that say “US citizens only” never show up in the match list, so the recruiter does not open them.

Who uses it

Teams placing H1B, OPT, STEM OPT, EAD and green card candidates.

What it does not do

The filter reads posting text, which is written inconsistently. It narrows the list; it is not legal or immigration advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does it exclude jobs that offer no sponsorship?

It excludes jobs whose text requires citizenship or excludes specific authorizations. A posting that only says it does not sponsor is not treated the same way, so check it before submitting.
