W2 to C2C rate converter

Last updated 2026-10-22

Short answer

A common rule of thumb converts a W2 hourly rate to a C2C rate by multiplying by 1.2 to 1.45, with 1.3 the usual midpoint. At a $50 W2 rate, 1.3x gives a C2C rate of $65.

Use the slider to apply your own multiplier, then read across the chart for common rates. It is a quick check, not a tax calculation, so use the W2 vs C2C vs 1099 calculator for a specific offer.

A common rule of thumb for C2C is 1.2x to 1.45x of the W2 rate; it is not a standard.

What the converter shows

Three things in one place.

  • Your W2 rate times a multiplier you choose between 1.1x and 1.6x.
  • Annual totals for W2 at 2,080 hours and C2C at 1,880 billable hours.
  • A chart of 14 W2 rates with 1.20x, 1.30x, 1.45x and your multiplier.

Why the C2C rate is higher

On C2C the consultant’s company pays the employer share of payroll taxes, buys its own insurance and benefits, covers business costs and absorbs unpaid time. A multiplier above 1 is meant to cover that.

Worked example

A $50 W2 rate times 1.3 is $65 an hour. Over 2,080 W2 hours that is $104,000, and over 1,880 billable C2C hours it is $122,200.

Limits of a rule of thumb

No multiplier suits every case. Benefits value, tax bracket, state, business costs and bench time all move the right number, which is what the full calculator handles.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1.3x a standard?

No. It is a common starting point in conversations. The right multiplier depends on benefits, taxes, costs and utilization.

Should I accept a C2C rate equal to my W2 rate?

Usually not, because the consultant then pays costs the employer used to cover. Run the numbers for your own case.
