What the calculator does
One offer in, the full comparison out.
- W2 or C2C and 1099 offers, with hours per week and billable weeks to allow for leave and bench time.
- 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction for single or married filing jointly.
- Employee FICA on W2 and self-employment tax on C2C and 1099: 15.3% on 92.35% of profit, with the Social Security part capped.
- A flat state income tax percentage you set.
- Value of employer benefits on W2 and business costs on C2C.
- An optional 20% qualified business income deduction.
- The equivalent rate in the other model and your walk-away rate for a monthly take-home target.
How the comparison works
Both models are reduced to value after tax.
- W2 value = take-home after FICA, federal and state tax + employer benefits value.
- C2C value = revenue − business costs − self-employment tax − federal and state tax.
- The equivalent rate is the rate in the other model that reaches the same value.
Worked example
An $80 W2 offer at 40 hours for 48 weeks with $8,000 of employer benefits, $9,000 of C2C business costs and 5% state tax has a total value near $116,600. The equivalent C2C rate is about $98 an hour, which is why a C2C rate must be well above a W2 rate to be fair.
What is left out
S-corp elections, itemized deductions, the specified-service limits on the 20% deduction, state brackets and local taxes are not modeled. Use the result to frame a conversation, then check it with a tax professional. This is not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is C2C always better paid than W2?
The headline rate is higher, but the consultant covers self-employment tax, insurance and unpaid time. The calculator shows where the two break even.
Why do C2C and 1099 show the same numbers?
Here both are modeled as a single-member pass-through business, so the tax math is the same. Real situations differ in classification and paperwork.
Where do the tax numbers come from?
Federal figures are the IRS tax year 2026 values announced on 9 October 2025. State tax is a flat percentage you enter.
